I work for a company where we deal a lot with metadata, like keywords on photos. One thing that seems useful to me that I was told a long time ago was to add the month and the year, and any sort of color in the photo if it is prominent (firetruck photo? Add that red tag.) My personal approach is always to answer the question “If I wanted this photo to show up in a search, what would I search on?” Those things seem to help.
